The Lazy Person’s Guide

A Survival Manual for the Motivationally Challenged

The Lazy Persons Guide – ‘A Survival Manual For The Motivationally Challenged’, is a satirical self-help manual and an antidote to the plethora of motivational books assisting people to do more, be more and achieve more. It validates the lazy person and places them in the position of ‘expert’.

This manual is a playful exploration of human behaviour and functions as an actual workbook. It including checklists, flow charts and questionnaires, to assist the reader to identify where they fit in the ‘Motivationally Challenged Spectrum’, from extremely lazy to overly busy.

This book is not a psychological reference, although at times it may feel like one. It is a work of fiction, based on my observations as a counsellor, a wife and mother, a family member, a friend and someone who finds human behaviour fascinating. This book is irreverent and sometimes a little rude, so my apologies in advance.

So kick off your slippers, lay back on your recliner and journey into the world of the motivationally challenged.

I had the pleasure of meeting Annabel Crab at the Writers Festival in Hervey Bay

I gave her a copy of my book, I hope that she enjoys it.

About the Author

Julie is a retired counsellor, with a passion for group work.

Throughout her long career, Julie designed and facilitated a range of group work programs in one of Australia’s largest counselling organisations. As an aside, she facilitated independent training to various organisations in the helping professions through her business ‘Synergy Group Design and Facilitation’. Since joining the ranks of the retired, Julie and her husband Nigel have left the hustle and bustle of Sydney and moved to beautiful Hervey Bay QLD, where she enjoys scootering around with her little dog, swimming in the ocean, and spending time in search of whales.

“I have just finished reading ‘The Lazy Person’s Guide – A survival manual for the motivationally challenged’ by Julie Holt and I must say this book is a total joy!  It is beautifully presented with wonderful illustrations accurately depicting their theme, written with a passion and subject matter knowledge to match, all wrapped up in a very generous dose of humour.  I especially loved the little tips, generously scattered throughout the book, always making me chuckle.  It was hard to put down and, in typical motivationally challenged behaviour, when finished all I wanted to do was kick-back in a recliner and read it again, blissfully ignoring all the work piling up around me.

This book explores a range of human personality traits, of which I could see a little bit of ‘me’ in all of them, and the experiences used to demonstrate those personalities were rather familiar, making the whole book very relatable.  It didn’t take long (by the end of chapter 2) before I was seeing the value of exploring my motivationally challenged side further (lol).  It made me feel somewhat normal knowing others out there have the same eccentricities and shortcomings, and take some of the same shortcuts I do.

I smiled the whole way through the book, just the degree of smile varied from upturned corners of my mouth to hysterical laughing.

If you are looking for a playful read, this is the book for you.  It is a very relatable, tongue-in-cheek insight into human personality traits that is well worth the read – not many books make you laugh out loud like this one.  A wonderful thing to do while doing nothing!”
